Ohio Township Volunteer Fire Company was established on August 13, 1946 when 19 men assembled at the house of the first president William Dornburg. The men each pitched in $1.00 and with that money the Ohio Township Volunteer Fire Company was born.
Through fundraisers, money was raised for a pumper which was purchased in 1948 for $750.00 from nearby Laurel Gardens Volunteer Fire Department
|
The fire company flourished over the following years, with growth in membership and strong leadership, OTVFC was able to keep on top of firefighting capabilities.
In the 1950’s a new fire hall was built and a vehicle was purchased for use as a brush truck, the Dodge PowerWagon is still in service today.
|
In the 1980’s, an addition was erected to the existing building to house our 8 pieces of apparatus. In 1984, the fire company participated in Basic Vehicle Rescue classes, which relegated a need for a rescue truck, in 1987 one was purchased and placed in commission until its replacement was bought in 2004.
|
By the time the 60’s rolled around, the fire company was operating with their 4th fire chief in command.
· Robert Weppner 1947-1948
· John Holzer 1948-1957
· John Thompson 1958-1961
· Terry Coyle 1962-1963
In 1964 that all changed when Thomas Larkin was elected chief and proudly served until his retirement in 2004. After his retirement, Larkin was succeeded by Jeff Frazier and holds the chief’s position today.
The 70’s brought about a productive decade in which 3 vehicles were purchased. Our 1979 Ford Tanker is still in use today.
|
Since 1948, Ohio Township VFC has held their annual carnival each July
|
Through the 90’s and into the new millennium, more equipment was purchased, and is still in use, such as:
· 1993 Sutphen Heavy Pumper
· 2000 Sutphen 75’ Aerial Truck
· 2004 KME Heavy Rescue
· 2009 Ford Super Duty Squad
|
Along with the Brian Coyle Memorial Sportsmen’s Bash each spring.
|
For over 60 years the Ohio Township Volunteer Fire Company continues to grow and provide fire protection for not only Ohio Township, but neighboring Sewickley Hills and surrounding areas.
|
